Best Portable Game Consoles

Portable game systems are small handheld video game consoles (even though some old handheld devices can only be used with one single game). The devices have controls included with the design and have a small color screen.
An example of a portable game system that is popular today is the Nintendo DS. The other main competitors in the race to become the best handheld gaming device are the PlayStation portable and the Gameboy Micro.

How are Portable Game Systems Powered?

Portable game systems can be powered in one of two ways and quite often it is possible to use both ways. The most common practice is to run the device on batteries. However as using the gaming device uses up a lot of battery power in a short amount of time, most companies offer the option to charge your game system with a lead that comes with the product. In this case you can still choose to put batteries in the device as a spare power source. The approximate battery life in game playing time is approximately ten hours with most devices.

Can Portable Games be hooked up to Larger Displays?

It is possible to hook handheld gaming devices such as the Gameboy Advance up to larger displays such as televisions. The handheld device is connected to the television set with a special cable after which the game can be enjoyed on a far bigger screen. So in other words, these small gaming devices can be used as home gaming systems too, making the product extremely versatile and it's a cheaper option than buying a game device that is only meant to be hooked up to a television.

Game Peripherals

As the handheld gaming device market is ever growing and new games are being developed as we speak, there are many gaming peripherals in the shops that do not only bring more money in to gaming device companies, but these accessories also make using the device more enjoyable. Some examples of these peripherals are:
  • Headphones, a must for every gamer.
  • Carrying cases, handy to prevent your gaming system from getting damaged.
  • Screen protectors, to prevent the screen from scratching.
  • Extra micro to micro leads to enable two-player gaming with one device.
  • A wrist strap to prevent losing your device.
Even though portable units offer satisfying game play (provided that you have a game that you can use) straight out of the box, these accessories can enhance the experience and make it possible for you to personalize your gaming device.
